Urban Oasis
Our clients presented a challenging brief for a very large house to accommodate a family needing to manage particular physical and health needs. A house designed to universal access principles was essential. A lift was required for mobility, as was an indoor swimming pool. The home also needed to feel like a getaway, an oasis, and provide space where the family could come together but also enjoy time apart. Our client wanted a contemporary-styled unique and relaxing yet hard working home.
As a buildng designer with a responsibility to the neighbourhood, as well as our clients. Our design response is a highly articulated facade of tilted, chamfered Alucabond and Australian drystacked bluestone to balance weight, mass and materiality. We paired this with a reduction of facade windows to reduce the perception of the home's width. Internally, what could have felt vast with a house of this size instead feels cosy. Timber floors bring warmth, and upstairs a curved timber batten wall blurs the lines between hallway and gallery, and has become one of our clients favourite rooms in the home.
